Matthew Manning, MD, Chief of Oncology Cone Health, CancerCare, walks the audience through intersecting concepts of health equity, social determinants of health, health disparities, and social justice. In this video, Dr. Manning explains that health equity is achieved when every person can attain his or her full potential for health and well-being. Social determinants of health are the domains in which inequities can occur, including economic stability, educational status, and healthcare access. Unfortunately, systemic inequities are in place that result in survival rates from cancer that are lower in people of color. He also shares thoughts on how systemic or implicit bias adds to health inequity and solutions to address the barriers.
