From its inception in the late 1980s, the role of the oncology nurse navigator and patient navigator has evolved as healthcare systems focused more on patient-centered care. Nurse and patient navigators increasingly became integral members of the multidisciplinary care team, improving efficiency and adherence to care by linking patients with hospitals, care centers and community resources.
