Oncology nurse navigators and oncology patient navigators play a key role in ensuring patients with cancer are connected to the resources they need. In this episode of the AONN+ Heart and Soul of Oncology Navigation podcast, Ayesha Azam, Vice President of Medical Affairs at the PAN Foundation, and Joanna Morales, Chief Executive Officer of Triage Cancer, explore how their organizations provide training, education materials, and more, to patients, caregivers, and oncology care professionals to help address barriers in cancer care.

The PAN Foundation offers assistance to underinsured people with life-threatening, chronic and rare diseases to get the medications and treatments they need by helping with out-of-pocket costs and advocating for improved access and affordability. Triage Cancer provides free education on all of the legal and practical issues that may come up after a cancer diagnosis. These organizations and resources are important for providing patients the confidence and ability to manage their care.

Here are the top 3 takeaways from Patient Education and Patient Empowerment:

  1. Patient empowerment starts with education. Every newly diagnosed patient and their caregivers should be introduced to the laws that apply to them and resources that are available to them so they can make educated decisions and find their best path forward beyond their cancer diagnosis.
  2. Health inequities, lack of access to resources, and a general misunderstanding about healthcare, create challenges for patients with cancer. Patients need more resources now more than ever as the COVID-19 pandemic leaves people struggling to keep jobs, put food on the table, and manage their treatments.
  3. Oncology navigators should identify a priority or focus area when examining their patient population, then set out to find resources that can help in those areas. AONN+ works to connect navigators with each other, allowing you to adapt strategies from other organizations, and navigators to see if they will work for you.
