Working in cancer care can be filled with highs and lows, especially for oncology nurse and patient navigators who stand by their patients from the very beginning to the very end. Nurse navigators and patient navigators witness and assist patients through their entire cancer journey, lifting some weight off their patients’ shoulders, eliminating barriers in care, and remaining a constant for them through treatment and survivorship. It can be emotionally and physically draining, but it can also be extremely rewarding – and no one understands these highs and lows more than your fellow cancer care professionals who are fighting the same fight.
The Academy of Oncology Nurse & Patient Navigators (AONN+) is made up of those people: a network of 8900 oncology navigators, social workers, program and/or center administrators, and other members of the cancer care team. AONN+ is a community of people like you who understand what you need in order to continue providing excellent care to your patients with cancer. AONN+ is continuously working to produce innovative tools and resources for cancer care professionals and provides AONN+ members a multitude of ways to connect with one another so we can all benefit from exchanging information, sharing best practices, and building a network of like-minded peers.

Live and Virtual Conferences
AONN+ convenes oncology navigators and cancer care professionals twice a year to discuss current and emerging topics, share best practices, and forge new relationships. Attending an AONN+ conference provides a unique opportunity to learn from oncology and navigation thought leaders and connect with like-minded professionals, while earning valuable CEs. AONN+ members have the advantage of receiving discounted rates for our conferences.
The upcoming 2021 AONN+ Midyear Virtual Conference, being held May 13-16, 2021, will have chat boxes in each education session, private messaging capabilities, and networking events that will allow you to interact with navigators and industry exhibitors from across the globe.
Local Navigator Networks
While global connections can give you a new perspective, local connections can provide you with more insight from navigators who are serving similar populations and working through similar barriers. Consider becoming a part of a Local Navigator Network (LNN) to join navigators and cancer care professionals in your area in making a difference on the state and national level.
As an AONN+ member, you can find and communicate with other navigators who have experience in your area of focus, who live in your area, or work in an area you have interest in learning more about with our newly updated member database. The database allows you to directly message and receive messages from other AONN+ members right within the AONN+ website!
Our private Facebook Group is an excellent platform to discuss oncology care ideas and professional experiences, as well as make logistical arrangements with one another for conferences. Members often pose questions to the group, discuss problems they are facing in their navigation programs, new research they have found, and successes they have experienced.
Oncology navigation is still a new concept; some programs may only have one navigator on staff, if they have any at all. This can lead to disconnect and confusion among your multidisciplinary team as to what the role of the navigator actually is. As the navigator position begins to reach more institutions and organizations, it is essential that we work together as a community to define our roles and make a difference in cancer care.
As a member of AONN+, you will never be alone. You are part of a community that sees your struggles, lives them every day, and is actively working to lessen the burden of these struggles.
