    How Can We Help: End-of-Life Discussions

    Description

    It is natural for patients, and even oncology providers alike, to find having conversations around end of life and dying to be difficult and awkward. During this session, we will examine the role of navigators in “normalizing” the end-of-life discussion and turning the focus of our conversations with patients from dying to how our patients want to live at the end of their lives.

    Objectives

    • Identify oncology navigator core competencies for end of life
      • Integrating patient’s preferences into plan of care (milestones)
      • Coordinating plan of care
      • Understanding of hospice care versus palliative care
      • Support patient and family through informed decision-making
    • Discuss the final phase at the end of life, addressing the core elements of a good death

    How Can We Help: Community Outreach, Early Detection, and Screening

    Description

    Now, more than ever, there is a need to focus efforts to support navigators as cancer early detection and screening begin to ramp back up or in some geographic areas remains on hold. Patients are also fearful and more reluctant to go for cancer screenings due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During this session, the presenters will address health equity and access, loss of insurance and impact on early detection, and the importance of navigators. Participants will also hear about the launch of the new AONN+ Community Outreach, Early Detection, and Screening Committee.

    • Address access to care barriers to early detection and screening
    • Discuss the opportunities now for navigators to assist patients to ensure they are seeking appropriate early detection and screening
    • Discuss metrics important for navigators to demonstrate value in outreach, early detection, and screening

    Dealing with a cancer diagnosis amid the holiday season can create stress, anxiety, and concern for patients, families, and caregivers. Explore how navigators can best equip their patients, families, and even themselves as caregivers with coping strategies and self-care ideas to manage during the upcoming holiday season.

    Objectives

    • Acknowledge the array of emotions that patients, families, and caregivers may experience during the holiday season while dealing with a cancer diagnosis
    • Examine the changes brought on by a cancer diagnosis, and, consequently, the effects on patients, families, and caregivers anticipating the holiday season (such as family dynamics, financial, treatment-related effects and limitations, emotions, and compassion fatigue)
    • Identify coping strategies and self-care ideas to deal with the holiday season amid a cancer diagnosis

    Understanding the current state of clinical trials considering the impact of COVID-19, this discussion will highlight the integral role of the navigator in providing assessment, education, and support for patients with cancer considering clinical trial options.

    • Explore how the pandemic has impacted the conduct of clinical trials
    • Educate navigators regarding questions to assess patients’ support for clinical trial enrollment
    • Identify barriers to enrollment
